Shallow Dishes or Plates (for coating)
- 1 block (14 ounces) firm or extra-firm tofu
- 2 tbsp soy sauce or tamari (for gluten-free)
- 1 tbsp sesame oil (optional for added flavor)
- 1 tbsp cornstarch or arrowroot powder
- 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs or crushed cornflakes (for extra crunch)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional, as soy sauce is salty)
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil (if frying) or cooking spray (if baking)
Press the Tofu
Remove the tofu from its packaging and drain the liquid.
Wrap the tofu in paper towels or a clean kitchen towel and place it on a plate.
Put a heavy object (like a cast-iron skillet or a few cans) on top of the tofu to press out excess moisture. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes.
Prepare the Coating
In a mixing bowl, combine soy sauce and sesame oil (if using).
In another bowl, mix the cornstarch, panko breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt.
Coat the Tofu
Dip each tofu piece into the soy sauce mixture, ensuring it's well-coated.
Roll the tofu in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
Frying
Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
Once the oil is hot, add the tofu pieces, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.
Fry for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden and crispy.
Remove with tongs or a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
Tips
- Pressing the tofu is crucial for achieving a crispy texture. If you have time, press it for up to an hour.
- For added flavor, marinate the tofu in the soy sauce mixture for 30 minutes before coating it.
- Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to avoid soggy tofu.
- You can experiment with different seasonings and coatings, such as adding nutritional yeast for a cheesy flavor or using different spices to match your taste.
Enjoy your delicious and healthy crispy tofu!
